A cable from London says the Kin;' received Lord Liverpool, the cx-Governor-Ceneral, and invested him with the Grand Cross of the Bath.
The Row F. C. Harvie, vicar of St. Mary's, left yesterday for Auckland to attend the annual diocesan synod. The Rev. G. T. Beale, vicar of Holy Trinity, To Hemii, leaves for Auckland"to-day.'
New* was received in Wellington yesterday of the death at Plymouth (England) last Friday of Mr.'R. W. Simpson, who was formerly general manager of the Assurance Company. He was aged 77 j'ears. —Press Association .Another pioneer of Thames, in the person of Mr. Edward Simpson, has passed away, aged 77 years. Mr. Simpson was a miner, and in the early days of the Thames goldfields worked in most of the famous claims.
It is stated on good authority (says the Feilding Star) that a petition is to be presented to Sir Thomas Mackenzie shortly after his arrival in New Zealand, asking him to contest the Tatea seat at the general election.
One of Auckland's early pioneer' soldiers, Mr. G. E. Cooper, died in his 83th year on Friday at his residence, Mount Eden. For eighteen years he hold the position t'f janitor at the Auckland Museum, retiring about ten years ago, and in the early days was a trooper with the late Major G. von Tempsky in the Maori wars.
Among the arrivals in Wellington is Mr. Robert Culver, F.R.C.I. who represents (lie British Dominions Emigration Society of London. Mr. Culver, who has already been to Canada, is on a mission to inquire what facilities exist for the settlement of English people on the land in New Zealand. His society has existed for upwards of thirty years, and has done a great work in assisting British families to Canada. They now desire to extend their operations to New Zealand. Mr. Culver has brought letters of introduction to the Prime Minister and other authorities.-
