HURFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The re-EraUliiK of the factory hill was commenced a fortnight ago, under tho supervision of the County Council's foreman, Mr. F. lieamark, whose lore experience In road work Is proving a very valuable asset to the ratepayers. Is exerting every effort to And sufficient labor to keep the drays gains The subsidy of £3OO, which It was believed was to he provided by the Government to make other additional improvements to the road, was inadvertently riot applied for, but at a meeting of the Settlers' Association on Wednesday night, Mr. Leo Sim, chairman, informed tlio committee that he had dispatched a telegram to Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., asking him to request the Minister of Public Works to have the subsidy placed on the supplementary estimates. We are exceptionally fortunate in having secured for our new school teacher Miss Collier, who holds a "D" certificate. Miss Collier comes from Manaia, and is a daughter of M. Collier, postmaster at that town, and formerly postmaster at Waitara. A very successful social ai.d dance was held under the direction of the school committee on Friday, the Ist inst. Mr. and Mrs. K. Spenco succeeded:, after a great battle, In carrying away the first gents' and ladies' prize 3, respectively, for the euchra tournament. At the previous euchre tournament Mr. "Harry" Smith and Miss 13. Spence were the respective victors. Mr. M. Roirdau provided excellent accordeon music, and officiated as M.C. The milk supply at our factory Is rapidly Increasing, and the output has now readied 15 boxes per day. Air. J. Boulson has accepted the position of assistant manager, and his appointment is much appreciated by the settlers. Air. A. S. Frost has been making his farm very attractive, atd has almost completed tTie excavating work at Ills daim, which will very soon become a very popular holiday resort for New Plymouthites. The erection of a house for our worthy foreman (Mr. F. Seamark) will soon he under way. We are glad to have such an enthusiastic resident oil the road. Butter-fat will soon need to be goinir up if farms are to have their milk removed from the cans by some unknown meat's, as was the case with Mr. Lovegrove a few days ago.
