It is suspected the Madras mail was wrecked by discontented coolies, who had previously been dismissed. Five carriages were telescoped. No Europeans were Wiled. Over thirteen Indians were killed, and many were wounded. European passengers rendered first aid with scarves and handI kerchiefs. The disaster occurred at 11 o'ulock at night. Fires were lit alongside the wreckage to help the rescuers. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. [The Madras-Bangalore mail train was wrecked near Arkonam. The disaster was due to the mysterious removal of a rail. On the previous day an attempt was made to wreck the Madraa-Bangar lore mail, but only a light engine preceding the train was smashed.]
