PORT PIRIE DANCE. The captain and officers of the Port Pirie were at a most enjoyable dance ut th<> Knst End Pavilion last Monday, and it was one of the jolliest dances of the -season. The Mayoress, Mrs. James Clarke, received the guests, and from b"ginning to end everything went with a swing, and one really couldn't help but dance to vhe delightful strains of Mrs. George's orchestra. The i'.al! and supper-room were massed with E-eenery. <md the balcony was gay with The supper tables were daintily decorated with pink and white azaleas. During supper, the Mayor :nsde a aliort speech, and calfcd for three cheers for the captain and oilifers, and the captain, in reply, called for cheers for the people of New Plyjnouth. No one seemed anxious to leave, and it wasn't until the early hours of the morninjr that the (lance broke up* to the stains of "For They are Jolly Good Fellows" and "Anld Lang Syne." SMALL DANCE. A very jolly little dance was held at Kawaroa Park Bungalow last Wednesday, the proceeds being in aid of the girls' hostel fund. The committee who arranged this were Mesdames Ashton, Bcnne | A. Smith. Stainton, Misses Gilberts mid Pellew, Messrs. Wilson, Winter and liaily. A very novel eiFeet in decorating It hall was achieved by the (lugs kindly lent by Captain West, <>! the Port Pirie, whilst the supper tables were charmingly arranged with wattle, priwrt.sps and trailing greenery. The muse, supplied by Messrs. Murphy and nail, was all that could be desired, and those present spent a vary enjoyable evening. The New Plymouth branch of the Victoria League has been advised by the London Executive that two women lecturers, Misses Bertram and Booth Scott, are to arrive in New Zealand in October and will travel the Dominion under the auspices of the Overseas Settlement Committee. Miss Bertram will give demonstrations in lifindcraft, and Miss Booth Scott will lecture on health. They also intend promoting the interests of the Women's Institute movement. GOLDEN WEDDING. A UNIQUE FUNCTION. A function almost unique in the history of I'atea was held on Tuesday afternoon, in St. George b Sunday Schoolroom, when the friends of Mr. and Mrs. John Shield, of Whenuakura, foregathered to tender their congra'tu- ' hit ions on the occasion of their golden wedding (says the Press). Luring the afternoon, Mrs. E. C. i ilorner, in a brief feeling speech, tenj dered the congratulations -of all. present to Mr. and Mrs. Shield on their golden wedding, and expressed the hope that they would continue to enjoy th'eir present health and strength, and inter on celebrate their "diamond jubilee." Speaking with deep feeling, n n<l addressing Mr. and Mrs. Shield, Mrs. Horner continued: "'For the greater part of your married life you have been in Patea, and all that time yon have always had a hearty welcome, an open door, and a seat at your table for all. In time of stress and trouble vou have been ever ready with practical help. In nearly every public function in the district you have taken your part, and as citizens of the Empire you have done nobly by bringing up a family of no less than 1G sterling boys and girls. In the time of your country's need you hint the proud distinction of sending no less than five of your sons to the front, all of whom eventually returned. (Applause.) We and all vonr friends have decided in make you a little presentation as a memento of to-day's gathering, and will ask you to accept a Kaiapoi rug from us all. We hope that when you enjoy its warmth you will think of the warm hearts of us all who are here to-ilay." (Loud applause.)
