DEARER BUTTER.
| ItETAIL PRICE 2a 101 PER POUNI} NEW SEASON'S PRODUCTION. Authority lias been received by th« dairy companies in Taranaki to supply the local market with new season's but* tor, the price allowed to be charged in the meantime being 2s 7Jd wholesale. This means that consumers will have to pay 2s lOd a pound, which is on the basis of the export value, This temporary arrangement has been made on account of Government stocks having been completely exhausted. As far an the wholesale distributors are concerned there is none of last season'* butter loft, but the retailers have tome email stocks on band. The new prica will therefore probably operate from to* day, or Monday at the latest. While this is a temporary arrangement, an announcement may be expected from the Government shortly as to the price at which butter may be sold local-i iy throughout the season. The Butter Committee is expected to report next week, and on receipt of this report it is believed Cabinet will immedately maka up its mind. The Taranaki Producers' stores at Moturoa have been completely cleared of last season's butter, and the final shipment of the cheese will'go by the Corinna shortly for transhipment to the Port Sydney at Wellington; The consignment will consist of 4,882 crates.
Of the current season's pr taction 10,000 boxes of butter have been received into the stores to date, and abont a similar number of crates' of cheese, the figures comparing very favorably with the total received in the same period lait year.
ENGLAND EATS MARGARINE. COLONIAL BUTTER OF GOOI QUALITY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received Oct. 8, 8.35 p.m. London, Oct. 7. Weddels annual review of dairy produce shows Britain's total supplies of butter in 1014-1:". were 240JQ00 tons, and margarine 107,000 tons. Supplies for 1919-20 were: Butter 130,000 tons; margarine 360,000 tons. Thus margarine now represents seventy-five per cent Of the country's consumption of edible fats.
The quality of much of the Government butter is very unsatisfactory, notably Danish and Dutch, but New Zealand and Australian have fully maintained their quality, especially Australian, which has been noticeably improving since Commonwealth grading was substituted for State grading.
