THE CULT OF THE JERSEY.

RECORD ATTENDANCE AT NEWTON KING'S SALE. KEEN DEMAND AND SPIRITED BIDDING.

That the demand for Jerseys showing quality is not by any means satisfied was manifested yesterday at the sale of pedigree Jerseys which was held by Newton King, Ltd., In ttelr Walwakaiho sale yards yesterday, "when there was a very large and representative attendance of buyers from all parts of Taranakt and from all over tire North Island. Indeed, the dairy cattle shed proved almost Inadequate to cope with the audience, a large number of whom had to crowd into the pen itself, though it was noticeable, that the crowd was ablo to fli.'d room elsewhere immediately the bulls came Into the sale ring. Tho fact that two well-known breeders, Messrs. P. H. E. Sur-> rey aud John Hale were largely represented in the catalogue, attracted considerable attention from Jersey fanciers, and the quality of the cattle elicited spirited bidding, which was assisted by practically the whole of the arrivals being put before tho public without reserve, the result being that of the catalogued animals submitted oi.ly two were passed. In ( all 49 cows and heifers and 37 bulls changed hands, realising tho handsome sum of 5517 guineas, or an average of over Ci guineas each. Among the female stock tho highest price realised was 146 gns by Mr. P. H. E. Surrey's seven-year-old cow Te Arei's Winsome, wlich was secured by Mr. W. Hopcroft, of Palmerston North. Mr. Hale's two-yeaT-old heifers, as was eonfldeLtly expected, elicited keen competition, Ave of Cicm realised over three figures, the top price being touched by the Grannie's Knight heifer Princess Belle, which was secured by Mr.' J. Kelso, of Ohaupo, for 135 gns., the same owner also securing a half-sister in Countess of Oaklands for 100 gns. S. J. Sutton (Urer.ui), paid 120 gi.s. and 100 gns. respectively .for heifers by Miro Meadow's Bos 3 and Grannie's Knight, whilst Mr. Hopcroft, of Palmerston North) paid 114 guineas for a two-year heifer by tie first-named bull. Mr. Hale's young bulls were also keenly sought after, four realising over three figures, the top prieo being 140 gns, paid by A, J. Smith, Cardiff, for tho yearling Silvenmlne's Knight, a handsome bull by Gratnie's Knight; half-brothers went lo W. P. Goodin, Oltato, for 135 gns., and to A. C. Bevans, Tikorangi, for 105 gns., while the two-year hull Kingseript, went to T. N. Baron, of Okato, for 100 gns, Only on one bull did Mr. Hale have a reserve, and this .was not reached. In nil Mr. Hale's seventeen females and seven bulls realised 2096 gns., or an average of 87 1-3 gns. The century was also passed by two two-year-old heifers submitted by Mr. \V. H. Jury. R. Luscton securing one at 108 gns, and Tizard Bros. (Kopu) the. other at 100 gns. • Tho arrangements for the sole were excellent, the ring having been specially renovated ai/d prepared for tho occasion. Mr. Ken Kirk, who wielded the hammer, was in his best form, and is to be congratulated on the success achieved, the heavy yarding being got through well, whilst vendors also lost nothing at his lands. ' Mr. R Cottier, of Stratford, relieved him for a time during the afternoon. , Messrs. C. Trehey aid A. Betts who looked after the booking and transfers had everything right up to the moment, whilst Mr. J. 11. Street .controlled the ring arrangements, an assurance that there were no unnecessary delays.
