JERSEY CATTLE.

' *ORTH TARANAKI BREEDERS. FIRST ANNUAL SALE. KEEN DEMAND FOR GOOD SIRES. That there Is still a keen demand by dairy farmers for pedigree Jersey bulls of good blood to place at the head of their herds, with a view to improving the butter-fat productlor, «ras again in evidence by the attendance, representative of all parts of the Nortb Island, that gathered at the New Plymouth Agricultural Society's Show Grounls yestercay, when the North Taranaki Jersey Breeders held an auction sale of pedigree Jersey cattle, representative of various herds throughout North Taranaki.

Considering the rough witter that has been experienced, tie cattle were mostly in very good condition. The majority of the bulls found ready sale, bidding being very brisk for anything showing quality , and condition. This is shown by the fact that the 63 bulls sold realised 3271 guineas, or an average of 52 gufteas. The top price was realised by Messrs. E. O'Sullivan and Son's two-year-old bull, Meadowvale Prince Daisy, a son of Messrs. O'Sullivans' world champion cow, Sultan's Daisy. This Ono bull was purchased by Mr. E. O'Hanion, of Opunake, at 300 gns. Mr. E. Griffiths was represented by three yearling bulls from his imported sire Viola's Golden Laddie, and this tandsome trio retted 505 guineas, top price being realised by Bilberry's Golden Lad, out of Lady Bilberry, which fell to Mr. Mortlock, of Normanby, at 200 gns. Mr. It. Dean, of To Kuiti, secured Majesty's Golden Laddie out of K.C. Daisy Girl, at 155 gns., and Mr. C. Wells, of Warea, Viola's Golden Laddie out of Bilberry's Lass at 140 gns. Oilier bulls to realise over a hundred guineas were Mr. H. C. Sampson's Lady Briar's K.C, 110 gns., aid Mr. A. H. Halcombe's Thelma's Fern Crove Laddie, 105 jus., both being secured by Mr. A. White, of 'Kaponga. Of the heifers submitted, eight were disposed of for 181 guineas, an average of CO gns., top price being realised by a two-year-old heifer, Leighurst's Gloss, bred by Mr. W, V. Harkness and secured by Mr. C. 11. Sharpe, of Te Boti, for 130 gns. Mr. C. Fairbrothor wielded the hammer with all lis old-time skill and had a busy day. Mr. R. P. Morrissey, the well-known Hawera auctioneer relieving him for a spell during the nffcrnoor. Though bids came freely there is no doubt that the sale would have been brisker but for the fact that a number of the owners had piaced reserves on their cattle. Messrs. J. Pickering and Mogan, who acted as clerks, got through their work capably.

The arrangements for tie sale were good, a spacious well-seated marqueo being provided, whilst there was no delay In bringing the cattle into the ring. A light luncheon was dispensed in the Society's luncheon room by the Bell Block ladles In their usual excellent manner.

Prior to the sale, Mr. H. B. Lepper, president of the North Taranaki branch of the Jersey Breeders' Association, extended a hearty welcome to all present, remarking that It was hoped to make"tie sale an annual one. Owing to the bud season the cattle were not looking as well as they would have wished. He briefly referred to the reputation that Tanmakl had gained as being the home of ihe Jersey, and said that all would admit that a remarkably fine selection of cattle bad been brought forward. He s-ild that at the first sale ii had boon decided U:at only iuaiden yearling and two-year-old haifers would he submitted, so that the public would bo sure of oitaining animals that had not been tr'ed. Ho thanked the Agricultural Society for allowing -.hem tho use of the grounds, and also etxcmled a hearty vol.- of thinks to the ladies of the Bell Block "dlswliir who had kindly come forward to provide liM.cliccji, (Applause.)
