work put forth by the chairman on behalf of New 'Plymouth and Taranaki as a whole. Before his advent they had not had the advantage of a paper wliieh circulated over the whole of the province, and which was an asset of considerable value. Mr. List replied that his aim had been to try and keep the interests of the province to the fore, more than those of any particular section of it. The Chamber of Commerce, had been doing good work, and owing to the illness of the president (Mr. Webster) it hal fallen to his lot to fill the office temporarily. In the recent conferences with other Taranaki Chambers, regarding the inauguration of a regular direct cargo service from England and the improvement of/the train services, it had been gratifying to* the speaker and other members, of the executive to note the cordial reception thj?y had received, and the readiness with which the proposals they had made had been supported. He also acknowledged th» great assistance given him as \acting-president by the members of the executive, which had just now special opportunities of helping in the pragren of the province.
