U.S. AND TREATY.

. NATION'S DESTINY AT STAKE. PRESIDENT'S NEW APPEAL. Br Telejraph.— Press Aasn.—CopyrightReceived Oct. 4, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Oct. 3. President Wilson has issued his first campaign appeal direct to the people, urging the endorsement of the League of Nationf!, and declaring that the world will wait for the verdict in November as it would wait for an intimation as to what its future was to be. Assertions that article 10 would make it possible for other nations to lead America into war, he characterised as absolutely false. It did not interfere with or impair Congress' right to declare, or not to declare, war, according to its own independent judgment as the constitution provides. President Wilson continued: "Do you want the country's honor vindicated and the Treaty ratified, and particularly to approve of the League as organised and empowered, and to see the United States play its responsible part therein? You have been grossly misled in regard to the Treaty and the character of the League. I am amazed at the gross ignorance and impjideu,t audacity which led my opponents to attempt to invent an Americanism of their own, for which there is no foundation whatever in tho authentic traditions of the Government. Americanism, as they see it, reverses the whole process of the last few tragic years." President Wilson concludes: "According to the arguments of its opponents, the Treaty would substitute America for Prussia, with a policy of isolation and defiant segregation." President Wilson makes the League the only real issue in the' bitterest campaign in history. He will take the lead in the fight, and direct the closing days of the campaign.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
