"THE AJ.C. MEETING. < balitros wins the derby. Record time for the race. • By Telegraphs"-Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 3, '5.5 pjm. Sydney, Oct. S. For the first day of the A.J.C. spring meeting at Rail<l wick the weather was fine, but cloudy. The attendance was over 60,000. Th® course was excellent, and the fields hie. The hurdles gave Forward Lady an opportunity of Stowing out, hut she fell at the hack. Dewdrop resurrected New Zealand' 3 hopes In the Trial Stakes, but found the lace too solid, and fell away. The Derby attracted the biggest field for niany years, with the exception of Kilboy's "Derby in 191 G. Sixteen started. Vespucci Battered supporters until challenged by Salitros, who led into the straight anil scored ft splendid victory. The time (2.32) was a record Derby, the previous best being Noctuifarm in 2.32%, The Epsom was a triumph for Qreeiistead, vsho was first to show out but was displaced by Bandurria who led for si* furlongs. Greenstead shot out again in tte straight and fought out a sterling finish with Jack Tinlay in 1.37, equallying the Australian record [held by Cetlgne at Flemington. Connell rode the Derby and Epsom winners. The finish , for the Spring stakes afforded the finest racing of the day, Poitrel and Kennaquhalr dead-heating. The latter led round the bend, but was downed in the straight by Poitrel, who seemed a certain winner. Kennaquhalr, recovering, wonderfully, all hut won on the post. Pershore, who was in front for most of the journey was three lengths behind the winners. Results: HURDLE RACE.—Stage Fright 110 1 Breastwork 10.11, 2, Yucatan 9.3 3 Ten starters. Throwa fell. Forward Lady led with Stage Fright. Breastwork was first round the bend, but Stage Fright came way at the Leger and won by three "lengths in the fast time of 3 40%. TRIAL STAKES —King Fores I, Monarma .. Pay Day 3. Fourteen starters. Montrose .ed comfortably till the straight, with Dewdrop handy. NOTES ON THE RACING, (By Wire.—Special to News.) Auckland, Oct. 2. Monopole and Cymer carried the bulk of tl,e money In the Ivingsland Hurdles, but Sir Aifnes looked better with the race of the opening day, and Rennle was more vigorous on him than Wednesday's rider. The result wis that when be got to the front, he stayed tbeTe, and won nicely from Monopole, who fiirly worried Cymer out. of second place in tlle straight. Golden Petal, who was out In front for more than a mile, was fourth. He I may be handy in a mile and a half hurdle 5 eient shortly. II The first day's two-year-old form was no 1 guide to the Nursery Handicap, the places j bolog filled by three new contestants, with
' trfidy Violet and Oranga fourth and oftL The winner shot out from the barrter and stayed there. He Is a son of Wolawa and Float, and Is owned by Mr. H. E. Troutbeck. Prince F'lrouz, a son of Feramorz, was second, just in front of Narautere, & son of Berragoon, wbo wis finishing on, and who will see a more pi ofl table day. Lady Violet need not be condemned for her. showing. The Avondale Cup showing of Landslide Pointed to him winning the Guineas, which want to him after an Interesting race, provided by Blackmail, Gas Bag, and Sjkork. Blackmail was in the lead for the mo3tn>art, but failed to stay, and both Landslide and G;*s Bag headed her in tte run. hourie, with Stork, wfco was always handy, in fourth position. Pure Laziness never threatened i to be dangerous, and may be tried as a I gfiding later on. I
Gazlque's second in the Cup made him the elect of the Plumpton Handicap field, and will handled, duly won from a lightweight in Sir Ralph, but ho did not have much to spare. Some Boy 11. was out in front for a term, when Bedford showed up, but lie wffj hardly ready to sae it out, giving way to Sir Balph. However, Gazique Just goi up in time to win witb his welter weight. Woody Glen was a good third, with Marble Siab h.'indy. 80-Peep was the last to finish, and evidently does not relish the weight. * The winner of the Mt. Albert Steeplechase w?.s First Call, who Improved with his race ol the opening day, and won handy from Pmeton. However, the pair may ha?e both suffered defeat tad Cnroglen not met with mishap by running into a fence just when diking a forward move runniug on the last , round. It was a good race between 1 ; Pnneton, Coroglen and First Call. Arran proved that his first day's victory ( was no fluke by again accounting for the open sprint event from his stable-mate Tamarot, which pair Wallace has very well just now. It looked afe if Parisian Diamond had just to move after the money in the straight to land the stake, but he was fairly beaten into third place by the Te Aroha pair, Arran has been a long time regaining form J but he appears to have now struck his best. I Ho will be. remembered as inflicting defeat j ■on Desert Gold when a two-year-old. A quiet tip ift Strategy, by Martian from Strathspey, hailing from' Jamiesen's stable,! was beaten into second place in the New Lynn j Hack Handicap by Regent, who had No. 1 position on the rails, and wham Roy Reed shot out smartly, never to be headed. This son 1 of Marble Arch and Kakama is evidently 1 useful. It is said that the connections of i Strategy went for a good win, but they were, lucky in getting second from Some fashion. ! Mllltaire was never prominent, <but tis form w.is not right, the race of the opening day evidently not doing him any good. 1 BHholia was the main selection for the j Mholapu Welter, hut the public wete again; wrong, the winner turning up in Rathlin, who W'w over the same course twelve months back-. He was always In front when they: settled down, and hugging the rails Con Raid won handily on tte light- weight. Lady Lnergy was flniahlng fast third, just behind the favorite, while Blue Cross was up close fourth. Tiranga, who carried a fair amount or money, was never dangerous. NAPIER PARK MEETING.
