The total Jail for the month was 10.34 inches. The high price which was realised for the lease of the Borough Council's ship | the Municipal Buildings, at ,the auction sale last Thursday, will probably have the effect of encouraging the building of new business premises in the town as soon as building materials are more readily obtainable. It is understood that several 'new premises- will be erected within the next twelve months, some of which will be in Broadway north. A local business man, in expressing his opinion on the future growth of Stratford, recently stated that he believed that in a few years' time the intersection of Broadway and Regan Street would 'be the centre of the business portion of the town. The Egmont Club has been asked by the Masterton Club to endeavor to arrange a telegraph chess match between players til the two clubs, the match to take place on an agreed date. Association recently i for funds, foi the purpose of building a much-needed new cattle pavilion, has not been as good as anticipated, and thi; committee lias asked the canvassers | to re-open their lists of donations. In view of the great advantages which will accrue to the association, breeders, and exhibitors, with the completion of the new pavilion,-41)a committee hopes that a more liberal -response will be made to the appeal tor funds. Tn explaining ihe necessity for the increase, the local hairdressers state that wages have practically doubled since the war, and the oi everything required in the saloon lias in nearly every ease inci eased by 100 per cent. It is understood that the petition is now in the hands of the sub-committee recently appointed by the council, and it might be a wise move before again presenting it to the postal authorities to ascertain if some.arrangement could not be made whereby the exchange could be kept open from, say, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. This should not involve any increased charges to subscribers, and, for the present at any rate, would meet the wishes of a large section of the subscribers who, while they would like to have a continuous exchange, do not feel disposed to pay an extra £2 a year for the concession.
