PAPER PRICES.
POSITION IN . ENGLAND. NO IMMEDIATE REDUCTION. "News ou reels, Sd per lb, f.o.b."— i £7-1 per ton—this is the advertisement , which most worries She newspaper pro- \ prietors of Great Britain (writes the London correspondent of the Sydney ■ Sim, under date of 'August s}. lit goes . on to say that in tlie last two years , 485 publications h;»,ve doubled and j trebled their prices afld vastly increased , their advertising rates. They are still . strenuously striving' to obta iu more i . reveuue by charging more for their f papers, and by passing some of the . extra cost of production on to the ad- j vertiseri, but few of them can show i any profit. ! i The cost of raw material-—newsprint 5 —has risen beyond all anticipations, and j . the other charges governing the ex-j pense of newspaper production have . soared iu unison. The Times lias just . issued a fortnightly illustrated paper, t and the price is Is 6d—just three times what it would have been before the j war. A few of the big papers drawing large sums from enterprising' .business firms are managing to keep ahead of the constant rise in costs. The Daily Mail, million a day, has a contract for advertisements with Hatreds, Ltd., for £IOO,OOO for .the next twelve months. Other papers without the same pull, i however, have to work under the most s, distracting conditions to make oiidc , meet. No pulp or paper manufacturing mills t disclose any desire to reduce their quo- ; talions. England is trying to become e partially independent of Scandinavia, s her main source of pulp supplies in rei cent years, by acquiring forest eoncest sions and interests in pulp mills in e Canada. Some slight achievement has to be recorded in this direction. e England is hoping that prices will t not go any higher, but nobody is very f sanguine on this point. Nor is there li any optimism as to any early substant tial drop in quotations.
