PRICE OF BUTTER.

The price of the new season's make of butter will be increased to about „' 2s Htd per lb as from to-morrow. * It is explained by the factory authorities that the price paid for butter fat since August I, has been 2s Od per pound, and one I leading butter factory operating in '_ Otago and Southland has now decided 3 to charge 2s 7Jd per pound for this ' season's make, which means that the j retail price will be about 2e lOd. The , factory referred to had to sell a por- ' tion of its output to-day at a lots of , one shilling per pound. The . practice of some people of purchasing r more than sufficient for their nonaal re- . quirements is not helping the situation, r and a shortage may arise should, the '. negotiations regarding the. supply for . the local market be protracted. When the increase is announced It wltt apply only to butter manufactured since August 1. Any old stocks will have to be cleared at the fixed price (retail) of Is 9d. It is not likely, however, that there will be much of last season's output remaining, so that practically all , butter will be affected when the new price is announced.
