TRADE EXPANSION.
INCREASE IN TARANAKI FIGURES. •LARGER LINERS IN PORT. i The expansion of the trade of Tara- ] naki is reflected in increases in the returns of the port of New Plymouth for the six-monthly period of this year from' April 1 to September 30, which were available yesterday. The frequency of visits of Home liners —the largest vessel to berth at any port in the North Island outside Auckland and Wellington is now loading a record cargo here—lms brought about i a marked increase in the total nett Uonnage dealt with, 10!) vessels aggregatKlg. fl '-i92S tons having visited the port during' the six months. In the same pejjiod last year 117 vessels only showed a Ttonnage of 79,<543. The decrease h th/ 9 number of ships this year is due toj the lengthy cessation of the southern Be'rviee, ,irregularities in. the Onehunga nil", and fewer coal boats; but the increased tonnage for a lesser number of sljiips provides a striking example of the part's development. jThe imports during the period totalled 4ff,687 tons, compared with 37,398 tone fojr the same period last year, an in-n-ease of 12,189 lons. The'exports this yliar were 13,998 tons, and last year yt,711 tons, an increase of 1257 tons. I'aken, together tlie imports and exports total 05..i,5.j tons this year, and 52,101) (lons last year, an increase of 13,478 fons.
