THEFTS FROM HOTEL.
YOUNG MAN EEFORE COURT. Thefts from a New Plymouth hotel resulted in the appearance of a young man riamed Alexander Davis, hefore Messrs. H. R. Cattley and J. S. S. Medley, J.P.'s, yesterday morning, charged' with stealing a safety razor valued at £1 ss, a Cardigan jacket valued at £1 17s 6d, and a fountain pen valued at £1 lg, the property of various guests at the White Hart Hotel. The accused, whose age was given as 18 years, was arrested by Constable Parkinson on Tuesday morning, the offences having been committed earlier in the morning. He had arrived fron®Eltham on Monday. Davis pleaded guilty on all charges. Accused was seen in the hotel passages, and when the servants passed pretended to be looking at a letter. A lady who was on the verandah heard someone in her room, and oil investigation the acaused was found, evidently searching .the room. He was told that he would be reported, and made his exit down the back staircase. He 'was later pointed out to the police and apprehended. At first he denied being in the room. Afterwards he admitted the thefts, and said he gave the razor to some person unknown, and the police have not been able to trace this article; the fountain pen was found in his possession, and he was wearing the Cardigan jacket. Nothing was known against Davis in his past career. Replying to the Bench, Sub-Inspector Hutton said the accused had no rijjht whatever to be in the hotel. He had apparently been drinking previously. Davis intimated he had nothing to say. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. The Bench expressed the hope that he would turn over a new leaf.
