The Daily News. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1920. BLATANT HYPOCRISY.
The outstanding feature of the debate in the House on Tuesday evening was the ludicrous spectacle of the extreme Laboriets championing the welfare of the Samoans, and lifting up their voice in" horror against indentured Chinese labor in that island. No wonder Dr. Pomare said that the ■ speeches' had revealed to him a great deal of hypocrisy, especially as only recently a New Zealand labor union had "kicked out" some mepibers of the Samoan race. Nothing more contemptible has been heard in Parliament than the allusion made by the member for, Lyttelton (Mr. McCombe) to the "stain placed on the New Zealand flag by the Government," and the country is indebted to Mr. Massey for his well merited verbal castigation of the offender. "If," said the Premier, "any man in this country had besmirched the flag, it was the honorable member who has just spoken." The least that may be expected from every member of the House is some regard for decency, but it appears the so-called Labor members consider that hypocrisy, like charity, covers a multitude of sins. They would apparently see Samoa and its industries utterly ruined than saved by the only possible means available until more desirable help is forthcoming. Tile incident showed the extremists in their true colors. If they are sincere in their views, and feel an/" desire to go over and help the SamoansJ no obstacles would be placed in their way so long as they did the work of the indentured Chinese and abstained from agitation. The Dominion would certainly do its best not to mourn too greatly if they never came back, and indeed would bo grateful if they took witti them the other extremists and I.W.W.'s, who are doing their best, to ruin this fair young country.
