September 27. A public meeting was held in the Municipal' Chambers to-night for the purpose of discussing the question of circulating a petition to Parliament asking that the freehold of the railway leases on the east side of Broadway Central should be offered for sale jby public auction. There was an attendance of 34, and the Mayor J. W. McMillan) presided. From the outset of the meeting it was apparent that a fairly large section of those present was opposed to the freehold, and an animated discussion took place. Eventually, on the motion of Mr.. W. H. Young, seconded by Mr. TV. McDonald, it was decided by 16 votes to 11 to circulate the petition. PLUNKET DAY. Plunket Day on Saturday was in. every respect very gratifying to the local Plunket Society, the total amount collected, including donations, being £52 9s <Sd. The tes rooms realised £6 lis, produce stall £l9 8s 9d, flower stall £9 18s 3d, and sheep guessing £7. The sheep-guessing competition was won by Messrs J. Butcher and H. Worthington, who both guessed the correct weight, 1231b, and then handed the prizemoney back to the society's funds. The sheep was lent by Mr. M. McDonald. Mr. D. Butchart guessed the correct number of beans in the bottle, 345, and he secured the prize. Mr. T. Grubb guessed the number of pins in the bottle as -206, and was awarded the prize. The correct number was 208. MUSIC EXAMINATIONS. The following are the passes in the practical examinations by the Uoyal Academy of Music, held in Stratford on Saturday, Mr. Alfred Quaife, of J,ondon, being the examiner. Miss Gertrude Brc'dow (teacher).— Primary: Florence Emily Rutherford Zeita Phillis Griffiths. J. B. HINE*PRESENTA'tfION FUND. The report of the executive committee of the J. B Hinc presentation fund states, inter a'lia. that Mr. Hine's supporters freely took advantage of the opportunity of expressing their appreciation of his services, and worth, with the result that the presentation took the form of a cheque for £IOOO. The social function at which the presentation was made was an unqualified success, and was thoroughly enjoyed by ail who attended. Since the presentation was made, varius donations had been received.. This had been the reason W delay in finally closing the whole matter. "The credit balance was to be handed to Mr. Hine immediately after the balance-sheet had been- adopted. The committee placed on record its keen appreciation of the spontaneous and hearty support accorded the movement, aild extended their thanks to subscribers, and particularly the ladies' committee, to whose effort's the splendid success of the social was due.
GENERAL. The Fanners' Co-operative Organisation Society has secured an option for the purchase of the premises of the Kxnpire stables, next to the Victoria bridge, from Mr. A. J. ttavey, and it is understood to be the intention of the management to transfer the local hulk store from the present site in Began ■-ireet to these new premises,' in view of the need for increased accommodation, owing to the growth of the businesa. There was quite a holiday appearance about the town to-day, Dominion Day being observed by the banks,, Government offices, legal offices, laud agents and a few business people. The bri«ht sunshme was a welcome relief after the unsettled conditions of last week. Mr. J. H. Frederic returned to Stratford on .Saturday night from an extended trip to Australia and the South Sea Islands. Mr B. - Masters, M.P., remained in Stratford to-day in order to lie pres-' ent at the public meeting to-night in connection with the railway leases He will return ta Wellington tomorrow morning. ' The lease of the centrally situated business premises in the municipal buildings, formerly occupied bv the borough electrical department, will be ofiered for sale by public auction, by Messrs.
