AN UNSAFE BRIDGE.

DANGER TO PEDESTRIANS. "The footbridge over the 'path joining Carrington Road (at the foot of Pcndarves Street) with Brougham Street provides a peril which should be immediately remedied," writes a correspondent. "This bridge has been in a dangerous condition for some time past, and though the matter has frequently been brought to the notice of the Borough Council, little has been done." The bridge was inspected -hy a Daily News reporter yesterday afternoon, and lie found it to be in a shocking state, providing a peril to pedestrians. The bridge is toppling at an uncanny angle, and nearly the whole of one side is completely broken away, offering a deadly trap to passers-by at night. The bridge shows signs of the erection of supports, but this lias not kept the structure on an even plane. The planking is sprung in places, but the worst feature is the fact that there is ; no handrail for half the length on one side. The danger is enhanced by the fact that the light, or, rather hvk of it, gives a deceptive aspect, viewing the bridge from the Car> rington Road end. Further patchwork it seems would be useless, and therefore the erection of a new bridge is # noces- ; sity. The danger to-users of the route would ; be sufficient justification for this i step, but the fact that the structiire., presents a bigger trap in the ease of,; children calls for some move urgently. The matter was mentioned to the, borotigh.engineer (Mr. W;H. Cookj by «. Daily News.reporter last evening:' Mr. Cook states that -the renewal of the l.vUlgp is really necessary, hut want of funds has prevented the Council doing very much. Minor repairs have been made from time to time, and some months ago the bridge had also to be raised on one side as it' was toppling over.
