TARANAKI DAILY NEWS. STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements ami items oE news for publication should be left at the office of the local representative, W. J. Wilson, next Union Bank. September 18. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce has written to Mr.R. Masters, M.P., expressing the opinion that section 24 of the Land and Income Tax Bill, now before the House, is dangerous, inasmuch as it was not very clear whether bonus money of co-operative dairy companies would be liable for taxation. If it was the intention of the Government to tax bonus moneys, then the clause should be opposed, and if it was not the intention of the Government to tax such bonus moneys, then the clause, in the opinion of the chamber, should be redrafted in order to make it more explicit. The chamber has .asked Mr. Masters to give these matters his careful consideration.
According to the story of Mr. H. E. Abraham, manager of the Stratford branch of Newton King, Ltd., who reached Stratford late last night on his return from a -business trip to Ohura, travelling in that isolated region cannot be regarded as a pleasure at this time of the year. Mr. Abraham and the party with him were twine stranded on the Paparata Saddle, the top of which is about twelve miles from Ohura township. On the outward journey, the motor car had to be left .on the road when about nine miles from Ohura, the party having to trudge through mud and pouring rain to the town.-"lip, where an important sale was to be held. On the return journey, tlie party had again to go through this unfortunate experience, being compelled to walk a distance of twelve miles under very uncomfortable conditions. It is stated that while the road between Stratford and Ohura is in fair condition, the particular piece of road on the Paparata Saddle is under no local bn.ly control, and after a few hours' rain it becomes practically impassable. If this is actually the case it should be the duty of the Government to see that something is done to give better communication through to Ohura by improving this very unsatisfactory portion of the road. A "hard-up" social and dance was held on Friday night in the Pembroke 4 0ad school for the purpose of augmenting the piano fund. There was a large attendance, and it was gene|ally voted the jolliest dance held at Pembroke Road this season. Mrs. J. Davidson'won the prize for the best lady's costume, and Mr. Townsend for best gentleman's. Mrs. Bianchi supplied the music, Mrs. Milne and Miss Martin 'contributing the extra dances.
A ladies' leap-year ball will be held in the Stanley Road School on September 24, dancing commencing at 8.15 p.m. The music will be supplied by Mrs. Bianchi and Mr. Parker.
When the old Finnerty Road bridge was wished away during a heavy flood last April, it was expected that the new hridge which had been commenced would be available for use without a great (leal of delay. Owing to various difficulties, however, the contractor was • unable to proceed* with the work, and the settlers have had to put up with the inconvenience of a ford ever since. At Saturday's meeting of the Stratford County 'Council, the engineer, in reply to a question as to the progress of the bridge, stated that the contractor had made a start, three days previously, and intended pushing on the work as expeditiously as possible. With regard to supplies of coment, the contractor had on hau,d IS tons for the bridge. The engineer to the Stratford County Council stated at Saturday's meeting of the Council that the foreman had reported that considerable damage had been done on the Cross Croydon Road through pigs being allowed to roam on Hie road, and the practice of settlers allowing their dairy cows to graze on the road wa* also causing trouble. The ouncil authorised the engineer to prosecute offenders if the nuisance was not abated.
