A GERMAN CHURCH .
AN ESSENTIAL BUILDING? Some discussion has recently taken place in the south regarding the proposed erection of a German church at Halcombe. It is said that a protest is to be forwarded to the Government. In connection with the proposal, a correspondent signing himself "One of the Returned," writes to the New Zealand Times as follows from Rongotea:— "I notice that tenders are out for a German church to be built at Halcorabe, and I have heard that a permit has been granted for same by the council. 1 read a short time ago that, the Government said that permits had only to be granted for essential buildings. Is a German church essential, when there are a lot of houses held up owing to the shortage of material, and in times like these, when houses are so scarce, I wonder if we Britishers would be allowed .to build an English church in Germany? I say no, we would rot. Then why should they be allowed io build one here? I say: Treat Germans as they ! would treat us."
