Mr. Henry Brown, of Inglewood, is seriously ill, and his condition is causing grave anxiety. Sir Joseph Ward states lie lias no intention of entering the House of Commons (says a cable from London). A cable from Sydney reports the death of Mr. John Devlin, a bandmaster who adjudicated at many competitions in New Zealand. The King is shortly to lose the services of one of his most trusted advisers, his private secretary, Lord Stamfordham having intimated his intention of resigning that position, most probably on the ground of age, his lordship being 71 years old. A cable from London says the Australasian Luneheon Club will tender a luncheon to General Sir William Birdwood on September 30, Mr. Andrew Fisher and Sir James Allen co-operating. In a by-election at Wellington yesterday to fill a vacancy on the City Council caused hy the death of Mr. G. Frost, Mr. W. J. Gaudin defeated Mr. T. Briud'le, Labor candidate, by 5156 votes to 2917.—Press Association.'
