COMING FRUIT SEASON.
PROSPECTS IN AUCKLAND. GOOD STONE CROPS LIKELY. The prospects for the coming frii't season are said to be exceedingly good in respect to most, varieties o.' fruit (says tlie Auckland Herald). The dry weather of the winter and early spring has enabled orchardists to carry out spraying operations under good conditions, and present indications point to good crops of stone fruits being marketed. Much depends on tlie weather during the. next few weeks. It is rather early in the season to form a reliable opinion regarding tlie prospects of the apple and pear crops. .It is stated that the unusual sequence of hard frosts this siiakoii lias been severely felt by the citrous fruits iu some districts. Some of the young trees have been killed and the older ones have been checked in growth. This is said to .tpply particularly to lemons, which have been \ydely planted during recent, years. A good strawberry crop is expected this season. It is stated that the number of plants laid down this year represents an increase of 100 per cent, on tlie number under cultivation last season. fp to tlie present the, new season's crop is looking well and a heavy yield is anticipated. A few berries have already ripened in some localities and tlie crop should start coining regularly on to the market about the middle of next month.
