THE RANFURLY SHIELD. WON BY SOUTHLAND. WELLINGTON BEATEN BY 17 TO 6. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Invercargill, Last Night. The RanfurJy Shield match, Wellington v. Southland, was played here to-day In the presence of a record crowd, and resulted in a win for the home team by 17 to G. The ground was soft, but not holding. * . The Southland forwards dominated the game, though Wellington got the ball from nearly every scrum. The Wellington pack was practically done half-way through the second spell, though they struggled on gamely. The Wellington backs were immensely superior in attack. For Southland, tries were scored by Fortune, Stead (2), and Holmes. One try was converted, and White kicked a penalty go'ii. The Wellington score consisted of a try by McCabe, and a penalty goal kicked by Nichollt. THE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. SATURDAY'S MATCH. Clifton and Hawera will meet on Saturday for the third time to attempt to decide the provincial championship of Taranuki. The ma'ch, which is to be played at Pukekura Park, is exciting considerable interest, as is only natural in view of the close and in'.eresting contests on the two previous occasions on which the teams met, each resulting in ; a draw. There is certain to be a large! attendance, as it is the first and only cccasion oil which followers of Saturday football will have of seeing an Important match In New Plymouth, and this fact will no doubl be fully appreciated by the Saturday halfholiday public. The match will commence ht 3 p.m.. but prior to it the Stratford District High School and Clifton 111. play a curtain raiser to decide who is to play with Kaponga for the provincial third grade championship. THE FOURTH GRADE COMPETITION. This competition has bten very closjly contested, and with the fourth round almost completed, Star hold a two points lead over High School C who have yet to play High School D, and in the event ot' winning would be level with Star, necessitating a play-off As tlie term holidays have intervened, and the High School find it inexpedient to p.ay football during tho third term, their te»mr« | haie withdrawn from the competition, which I has therefore been won by Star, who are to be congratulated on tho keenness shown throughout. Indeed, the competition provod an entire success, and its initiation has been 1 frlly justified and it is hoped will be continued next year. •
