A London cable states that the rumor that Viscount Milner is resigning from tiie Ministry is unfounded. Mr. A. H. Johnstone, of Auckland, and recently of New Plymouth, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Boon, late of Nelson, spent yesterday in New Plymouth, and leave by the Rimu this afternoon for the North. The death of Mr. Thomas Brown, of Messrs. Thomas Brown, Ltd., Christchurch, is reported in a cable from Sydney. Captain Raihey, marine superintendent for the C. and D, Line, was in New Plymouth yesterday in connection with the visit of the Port Alma, and returned to Wellington later in the day. Mr. W. Padfield, marine superintendent for Australasia for the Phoenix Assurance Co., Ltd., arrived from Sydney on Monday, and is staying at the White Hart Hotel. Mr. R. IT. Bartley, New Plymouth tramways manager and electrical engineer, was yesterday seized with an.attack of appendicitis, and is now an inmate of a private hospital. It was reported last night that Mr. Bartley's condition was satisfactory. A cable from London says General Booth's eldest son Bernard is engaged to Miss Jane Lowther, an English, girl who joined the Salvation Army in Sydney. One of Canterbury's oldest settlers, Mr. David Morrow, died a few days ago at the advanced age of H - 2 years. As (he senior partner in the well-known implement, importing firm of Morrow, Bassett and Co., deceased was in business in Christchnrch for many years, and then followed farming pursuits, ultimately retiring and living in Christchurch. A cable message from Sydney reports the death of Doctor Laurence Hersehell Harris, aged 48 years. He was a pioneer hi the use of the X-rays. At the New Zealand Medical Congress in 1913 he read a notable paper on the use of opaque metal for the examination of gastric and intestinal complaints. A Press Association message from Wellington states that the Air Ministry advises that the body of a flying officer, Nealc Fitzgerald Kagar, of New Zealand, has been recovered in the Sinai States, Palestine. Mr. Eagar was studying for holy orders at St. John's College (Auckland) when war broke out and he left with the Main Body, but exchanged into the Royal Air Force five years ago. A resolution of condolence with the family of the lajte Hon. W. 11. S. MaeDonald was carried at Monday night's meeting of the Stratford Borough Council. Tiie Mayor (Mr. J.- W. McMillan), in moving the motion, stated that Mr. MaeDonald was a thorough gentleman, a line politician, and a statesman, and his death was a loss to the whole Dominion. Tl.c Council also doci'ded to send a letter of sympathy to Mr. H. L. Betts, a former councillor, in the death of his son last week. Levy, Postmaster, Whangarei, to be Relieving Officer, General Post Office. Mr. J. James, Postmaster, Marton, to be Assistant-Postmaster, Christchurch; Mr. IT. H. Cork, Postmaster, Feilding, to be Chief Postmaster, Greymo.iHi. Mr. F. W. Penlington, Supervisor, Money-order and Savings Bank Branch, Auckland, to be District Accountant, Wellington. Mr. S. Ayling, District Accountant, New Plymouth, to be Chief Postmaster, Westport. The respect in which the late Mr. M. J. Brennan, of Opunake, was held in the district was shown by tiie large and representative gathering which attended his funeral at the Opunake cemetery yesterday, and by the beautiful floral emblems forwarded by the various concerns wtih which he has been identified, and by numerous friends. The service at the church and at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Father Doolaghty, assisted by the Rev. Father Kelly (Manaia). The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. R. Wright (chairman of the Egmont County), C. A. Trotter (chairman of the Opunake Town Board), M. Fleming, G. Looney, J. Young, and T. H. H. Sinclair (chairmen respectively of the Cape Egmont, Piliama, Ooonui, and Opua dairy companies, of which deceased was secretary). At the meeting of the Egmont County Council yesterday a resolution of sympathy was passed with I Mrs. Brennan and family in their sad I bereavement.
