A SEASIDE RESORT.
THE ACCOMMODATION DIFFICULTY The popularity of New Plymouth as a seaside resort lias been increasing yearly, and every season the demands on the accommodation far exceed the room available. Keporting to the annual meeting of the Tourist and Expansion League last evening, the secretary (Mr. W. A. Collis) stated: "Inquiries for accommodation were very numerous, and they promise to he the same for this season, as already inquiries are reaching the office for accommodation for the coming Christmas; (his is earlier than usual, but evidently people are determined not to be left in the lurch if they can help if The meeting discussed the question of arranging summer accommodation. The president (Mr. T. C. List) said that any cha-nce of getting temporary quarters by means of a "canvas town," as had been suggested last year, had disappeared, owing to the objection of the Railway Department to allow the use of the land in the vicinity of Moturoa. The matter of providing for the overflow of visitors was a problem. Unless an area near the beach could bo secured, the proposition of temporary quarters was not very feasible. The public would put up with a certain amount of discomfort if they were in proximity to the beach, as it had an attraction which was a kind of compensation; but the same glamor did not apply to temporary quarters away from the beach. The League decided that it could do little in view of the existing circumstances.
