WAH SECRET REVEALED. How firemen saved a town, a closelykept war secret, ig revealed by the award of medals of the 0.8. E. to Superintendent Woods, Third Officer Slcelton, Sergeant Greetham, and Fireman Moore, of the Grimsby Fire Brigade, says the Daily Mail. On June 13, 1015, H.M. munition ship NS7 was hurriedly laden with high explosives at Grimsby for a French port. Just as she was about to sail Are broke out on board, and made such headway that the ordinary lire pumps were unable to check the outbreak. It was realised that if the flames readied the cargo not only the whole of Grimsby dock,? but a large portion of the ( iwii must be wrecked bv the explosion. The only hope of preventing the disaster lay in sinking the ship. Firemen donned smoke helmets and rushing through the fire, reached and opened the seacocks. The inrushing water cooled the heated plates, and the ship sank. The whole brigade was recommended for decoration for coolness and courage, but the four named Werel selected f&r the die Unction.
