RAILWAY TO MATIERE.

QUESTION AS TO PROGRESS. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. Mr. W. T. Jennings (Waitomo) asked the Minister of Public Works whether any attempt is being made by the Public Works Department to push on the four small bridges and four tunnels leading from Mahirakau to Matiere. The member added: Statements are general in the district, made at public meetings, that nothing is being done, and that the steel rails' for the bridges have been, removed from the district to other railway works in the Dominion. Mr. Coates replied: The plans of the 'bridges have already been made, and the necessary steel is on order. With reyard to the tunnels, although no work is being done, at present, as soon as the longer tunnel now approaching completion is finished the men thereon will be placed on the small tunnels, which they can finish in ample time to prevent the tunnels being the determining factor in the completion of the line.
