Wellington and Otago played a Banfurly Shield match at Carisbrook to-day in beautiful weather, and in the presence of fully 12,000 spectators, the largest crowd seen at a football match in this city since the visit of the last English team. The visitors won by 16 points to 5, hut as their score included two potted goals by Roberts, and a somewhat luojry try from-a rebound off the Otago cross-bar, there was not the margin of difference between the teams which the score suggests. The forwards of both teams were evenly •natch, but Wellington got tho ball in the majority of the scrums, and this fact, reinforced by the greater cleverness of the backs, gave them final victory. Apart from tho two goals potted from the Held by Roberts, O'Sullivan scored two tries foftho visitors, one of which was converted by M. Nicholls. Otago's try was the result of a brilliant Solo effort instituted at halfway by Fea, who finished off by scoring himself. Turnbull kicked a very fine goal. WELLINGTON DEFEATS MANAWATU. . In the second spell, Wellington showed dash, scoring within a few minutes of the opening, but later missed several chances. Manawatu scored In the dying stages of the game. Wellington tabled eleven points in the second half. The ground was heavy, nevertheless, both sides • of backs should have been seen to greater advantage, play being for the most part colorless and devoid.of spectacular incident. Good tackling by Wellington was a feature of the game. During the first spell, Eglington retired on account of slight concussion, and was replaced by Lawrence. CANTERBURY BEAT WANGANUI. ,„ Christchurch, Sept. 11. Wanganul played Canterbury in the presence of 5000 people, and after a very poor exhibition of football, Canterbury won by 19 points to 11. A REVIVAL OF RUGBY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 12, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 12. There is every prospect of a successful Rugby football season to celebrate the Rugby Union's jubilee. Last season was a comparatively poor one, as sufficient time had not elapsed to repair the war's ravages. The interval has now produced a crop of promising younger men, enabling the old stagers to retire. Few county games have been played, but the club fixtures only begin next week. Rugby Union circles regret that the Northern Union code lias made such progress in New Zealand, as well as Australia, but there is no likelihood that the rules will be amended to meet the wishes of Australia and New Zealand, even if international tours cease as a consequence. Ic is expected that South Africa will adhere strictly to the Union code Followers of tiio rival code in North Engl«ng are elated at its progress in tho Antipodes, and full reports of the test matches played in Australia and New Zealand were read with great interest. Tlicro are indications of a. highly successful season in the north, despite the counter-attractions of the Soccer' game—Aus -X.Z. Cable Assn. A BENEFIT MATCH.
