SOCIAL PROBLEMS.
VIEWS OF THE W.C.T.U. By lelejrnph.—Press Association./ Dannevirke, Sept. 10. The annual district convention of the Hawke's Bay W.C.T.U. commenced here yesterday, Mrs. James Bibby (district president) presiding. A resolution of appreciation is to be sent to the Minister of' Education for including temperance instruction in the school syllabus. It wa,s decided to urge the Government to 'establish in all the chief centres clinics for the treatment of venereal disease where sufl'erers could attend by day or by night for free voluntary treatment. It was decided to urge also that legislation be introduced placing upon the father of an illegitimate child the responsibility of providing for its birth; should his failure to do this result in the death of the child, either from neglect or foul play, be to be held equally responsible with the mother for such death and placed beside her in the criminal dock. The convention also passed a resolution protesting on moral grounds against the employment of indentured labor in Samoa.
