FARM AND DAIRY.
SHORTAGE OP FEED. . IN THE WAIKATO. Says the Waikato Times:—The pastures of South Auckland have been seriously affected by the recent frosts, and there has not been such a shortage of grass for very many years at tin's period. Dairymen everywhere are complaining as the stocks .of winter foodturnips and hay—are done, and sustenance for stock is now so short as to be approaching the famine stage. The country everywhere looks fresh enough and the grass a few weeks ago was coming- away well, but was cut sharply back by the subsequent frosts, until the cattle in some places can now scarcely get a bite. The stocks of new season's dairy produce in the freezing stores had, up till a month ago, been coming in rapidly, and were well ahead of last year, but they are now falling away again. The prospects for the coming season, otherwise exceedingly bright, are marred by the present shortage of feed, and if the frosts arc succeeded by a warm dry period, it will spell disaster to many. A substantial fall in the price of stock lias already been experienced, and prices will continue to decline wt l l spring growth sets in.
