' | If Warrawee. and Prodigal aro produced at i Awapuni to-day, they will carry big money, j A southern paper announces that Geo, j 1 Young has been engaged to pilot Royal Star ] , in the New Zealand Cup : We read a lot about poverty In Germany, i but, nevertheless, the Derby run at Haiu- \ i burg, in June, was worth £IO,OOO. 1 ■ Met a man the other day who professed j I to fancy Catalini for the--New Zealand Cup. ; [ The writer wouldn't be on her with bad i | money. ! i Down In Palmerslcn they will have nothing! hut Kurapai for the Hunt Steeplechase. Ths j I Foxton prad is reported to be very At. ! | Movement is to bo mated with Hallowmas! this season. The imported stallion at- | tracted much attention last week when on 6how in Stratford and Inglewood. Wanganui entries nte not up to the nsinl standard, but what enn you expect when ihe meeting clashes with those of the Otaki and Avondale Clubs. The Dates Committee of the Racing .Conference really should arrange things better, 1 On the programme of the Masterton spring meeting is a race entitled the Lawn Handicap (hack conditloris), which is "for apprentices only," and one condition is that * r no whips or spurs ate allowed?" Some day they will have bare-hack racing! Fingmf, by Finland—War Scare, who won the Granville Stakes at Rosehill last month, started favorite, and beat a big field rather comfortably. Fingon is engaged in the Caulfleld Cup with 6.11. An exchange-states that H. Gray has been retained by Mr. W. G. Stead far this season; H. Young by Sir Geo. Clifford; B. Dceley by Mr. G. p. Greenwood; and A. Reed by Messrs. Riddiford. ; C. Emerson will probably ride for the Douglas Estate. 1 The track doings of Amythas and Arrowsmith nt Riccarton have raised considerable interest. Both, cracks have been galloping well, but AwOwsinith's seven furlongs in 1.27 4-5, was the gem of last week's -trials. The imported horse is probably the better track worker, .but Amythas proves all there with the colors up. Mr. Arthur Way, secretary of the Marton Jockey Club, and an old pressman himself, knows the requirements of the pen-pusliors on race days, and attends to themi thoroughly. All information was promptly supplied, so that those engaged In reporting the gathering only required to leave their table to witness the racing itself. The hosnuality of the Marton .T.C. is yovcrblal, and visitors took away with them happy reminiscences of a day enjoyably spent. Wanganui sports have gone in for early rising since Mr. W. R. vKcmball's team of thirteen horses were shifted there. Most of the members of the team look well, but Trespass is very sore, Wleldone is galloping most attractively, and should win big monev this season. It is stated that both Amvthaa and Arrowsmlth will be sent to Wanganui this month, in which oaso they will meet in the new race, the Eclipse Stakes, run over a mile. Jn addition to Sasanoff and Amythas, who were withdrawn early, the first acceptance for tho .New Zealand Cup accounted for Dusky Eve,, Affectation, Sfarland, Hetaua, Cashmere, Right and Left, Arch' Salute, Motulhi, Rose Wreath, Delight, Parorangi, Blackhead, Samovar, and' Wimlemere 'Hilriv-elght remain in, including Vagabond. Snub, Kilrush, Oratress. Royal Star,. Nobleman, Tenterfield, Johnny. Walker, Rose Pink, etc. Tirana, who finished third to Egmont Park and Scrap o' Paper at New Plymouth, and second to Nursing Sister at Marton, looks to have more than a rough chance in the Walkanae Handicap, seven furlongs, at Awapuni. His most dangerous opponents may be Gas Bag and Ruddy. The Fitzherbert Handicap should see Warrawee in strong demand. He ran a great race at Marton, and appeared to be unlucky to get beaten. Utuwai and Sea Foam (if reserved) should give the Wanganui horse a good "go" for it. Racing men roared with laughter in the High Court in Englhnd recently over the question asked by Mr. Justice Darling: "Is a turf accountant a person who accounts for tvhat happens on the turf?" Jockey .7. Carmody, America's leading rider, Intends trying his luck in England. Carmody goes to scale at 7.2, and is not yet 17. From January lto June 30 of this year he had 452 mounts, and his record read: (•8 firsts, 77 seconds, 70 thirds. Carmody Is a busy lad as well as a successful one. Gloaming's sister, Refraction, was a wanm favorite for tho Adelaide Guineas last month, but was decisively beaten by the Charlemagne It. colt, Hesso, who won in a canter. Kinlark, who was presented by Mr. J. M. N'iall to the Prince of Wales, should win races in moderate company in the Old Dart, though ho is far below Liverpool Grand National form. What nice, kind-hearted ruffians the Bolshevik?, are. The Paris Sport states that the "Bolshies" seized a son of Sunstar, and learning that the horse had won a race for a cup offered by.the late Tsar, had the unfortunate animal shot after trial by courtmartial and condemnation for "having been bttnehed to the old regime." Fast times seem to lie oiiliic common occurrences in U.S.A. At Latonla (Kentucky), Upset nine and a. half furlongs in 1.56 3-5, fractional times being: Half-mile, 47secs.; six furlongs, 1.12; and mile, 1 38. In winning Ihe Latonia Oaks, Busy Signal covered a mile and a quarter in the torrid timie of 2.2 3-5, and carried 8.9. Most people were amused when a southern writer stated that Coalition was imported from Australia, but another correspondent corrects the writer, and points out that Coali-I lion was bred by Mr. ,T. Foreman, of Tikorangi. His sire Patronus stood in Tarannki for many years, while his dam Pauline, though not a stud book more, was the mother of Useful horses like Muharanui. Mallet, Silva, Patriotic, Patroness, and Cordon.
