NO CEMENT.
WORKS CLOSED DOWN. BUILDING MAY STOI'. The closing down of the Wilton Cement Company's works, as a result of the shortage of coal, has been notilied to the secretary of the Taranaki Cement Distribution Committee. . The firm announces that there is no immediate prospect of supplying New Plymouth with cement. The works have been closed since August 2S, but though it is anticipated that supplies of coal will be available shortly, it will lie two or three weeks after operations are re-commenced before cement will be available for shipment. > In a letter to clients it is stated by the company that the stocks of cement have been completely cleared, but as soon as supplies become available they will be distributed -as far as possible, giving consideration to the most essential and urgent jobs. , The effect of the closing of the works will be far-reaching, arid as supplies have been on a hand-to-mouth basis for some time, present stocks will not last long. Speaking to a Daily News representative yesterday, a gentlemati prominently associated with the building trade anticipated a stoppage of the various: jobs under way in New Plymouth jf a suppl* of cement was not received shortly, as. it is some time since the last shipment was distributed.
