DUCHESS-RUAHINE COLLISION
DECISION OF THE COURT. By Tolejraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 4. The Marine Court which inquired into the collision between the harbor ferry steamer Duchess and the liner Ruahine on July 27, gave its decision this morning. The court found that the casualty occurred through the Duchess over-runn-ing her distance in a thick fog while approaching Queen's Wharf. Although the master of the Duchess, John Dowry, took the same precautions and adopted the usual methods in approaching the wharf through a fog as on previous occasions, the casualty was contributed to by an error of judgment on, his part in estimating the speed of the vessel and in running at full speed for three minutes into an increasing fog before reducing speed. Tho master's certificate will be returned, but he is ordered to pay half the costs of the inquiry, The court expressed the opinion that the Wellington Harbor Board should instal a fog signal at Queen's Wharf and have it sounded during a fog.
