A message from Tokio states that preparations for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Japan in the spring are reported to be progressing. Mr. A. Denham, manager of the Patea branch of the Bank of Austral- : asia, is leaving shortly on transfer to Ashburton. Mr. Paviour-Smith, who lias been a member of the staff of the Patea branch of the Bank of New South Wales, is leaving next week to enter into business with his father in Dannevirke. The death of Mr. George H. Sayers, land agent, «nd formerly Mayor of Grey Lynn (Auckland), occurred at a private hospital on Monday, at the age of iifty. Mr. Sayers, who was i a native of Mitcham, Surrey, enlisted in the British Army as a boy, joining the Royal Maripe Artillery, with which he remained for nine years, reaching the rank ofi sergeant-major. The death is reported of Sir. John Gumming Clarke, one of the bestknown Public Works officials in the King Country. The deceased, who was a Bon of Major Clarke (13th Light Infantry) and a grandson \of the late General Joseph Clarke, was 55 years of age. He came to New Zealand many years ago, and entering the Government service, was stationed in Hawke's Bay and at Kawhia before cowiug to To Kuiti some eight years ago. Miss Elizabeth Inkster died at Wangjnui on Thursday after a short illness. Miss .Inkster had been for soma years commercial instructress on tiie staff of the Girls' College, and both in that capacity and in private life earned the highest esteem of all who knew her for her lovable and truly womanly qualities, and her loss will make a distinct gap in the circle of .her many friends (says the Wangiutui Herald). •> Sir Keith Smith, who with his brother, Sir .Ross Smith, accomplished <the great flight from England to Australia, is due to arrive in Auckland on Monday by the Riverina. Arrangements are in hand for au adequate reception of the distinguished airman, It is probable that seaplanes from the New Zealand Flying School at Knhimarama will meet the Riverina outside the harbor, and that a message of welcome to the city, signed by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, will be dropped on board tlie vessel as she comes up the stream. Sir Keith will visit other centres of the Dominion late?. ,
