FARM AND DAIRY.
THE BUTTER OUTLOOK. It was a pity, said Mr Nathan in commenting .on a speech of Mr Dernier at ,sie annual meeting of the Cheltenham Dairy Company, that more attention was not paid to the testing of dairy herds. Vr Nathan thought the average output for New Zealand, namely lfillbs per cow, should at least be doubled. The Cheltenham average was satisfactory, but there was a great deal of room for improvement. He mentioned two herds in the Manawatu which were supplying one of his company's factories, one of 4f> cows and the other of 52 cows. The first herd averaged 3501bs per cow last season and the second 3741b. One of these herds was started only six years ago, and it included now only three or four purebred cows. The herd was not excessively fed, the good return being due to careful selection and attention to the stock. If the average per cow for N.Z. were raised from liidlbs to SOOlbs, there was no saying what the price of land would go to.
