STRATFORD MAYORALTY.

A DIFFICULT POSITION.. . . DISQUALIFICATION THREAT, (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The chief topic of conversation It Stratford to-day was the peculiar predicament in which the Mayor (Mr. j. WMcMillan) has been placed through bia firm supplying the Borough, Ckiuneuwph goods to a greater value than the amount allowed by statute in such cases. All classes of the community Mel genuinely sorry that Mr. McMillan should find lijniself the victim of such circumstances, and the hope is generally expressed that the Auditor-General wjll eixercise his discretionary powers in such cases, and allow Mr. McMillan to remain in office. Speaking to the Daily New* representative thig morning, Mr. McMillan stated that it was his earnest desire that the council should not purehaie anything from his firm, and it was only on the understanding that the council officials would sec that tie limit was not exceeded that lie allowed anything to be sold to the council at all. Should the Audiforfieuetal decide that Mr. McMillan must be disqualified, the loss of his services to the borough would come at a most inopportune time, as the big loan proposals which he fc*« brought forward will shortly he submitted to the ratepayers, and his kelp in explaining them will be needed. The opinion is' general, even amongst those who did not support Mr. McMillan'* candidature at the municipal eketio*. that as Mayor of the borough he has m>de good, and that he is the right man to push forward the best interests of Stratford. The decision of the Auditor-General on the matter is being awaited with interest, and not a little anxiety, by Mr. McMillan's l'riends. ' ,
