NAURU PHOSPHATE.
TARANAKI WORKS WANTJS., FARMERS TAKING ACTION. • The necessity of obtaining adequate supplies of fertilisers at reasonable prices, with a view to increasing production, is more und more engaging the attention of the Taranaki dairy, farmers, and at last night's annual meeting of the Frahkley Road Dairy, Company a move was made in the matter. A resolution was passed instructing tlig directors to take steps to convene a conference of delegates from Taranaki dairy factories with a view to erecting a plant tor the treatment of Nauru Island phosphate in Taranaki, on a co-operative basis. '; - Mr. L. Hill, who moved the resolution, said lie understood there were only two plants in New Zealand capable- of treating Nauru Island rock, namely, on': in Auckland and the other illChristchurcb, and if treated in Auckland the' cartage and vrharfage must materially increase the cost. Moreover, he Understood that concern was a proprietary one. The great cry at present was for more production, and to get, more production it was necessary to get fertilisers. Mr. V. Baker said he understood thai, the Smart Road Freezing Work* Com«' panv intended installing a tylaht. Mr. Hill said that plant would only be for'grinding the rock. To instal a plant for the complete treatment of .the rock would cost £300,000. Mr. Powdrell, M.P. for Fatea, had,, he : under«\ stood, received a promise from the Prime Minister that he would allow them to have the rock as cheaply a* possible, and it was up to them to mov» so as to take advantage ot that. The motion wan seconded by Mr. I* Gilbert and carried.
