FRIESIAN BREEDERS.
MEETING AT HAWERA. On Saturday a meeting of Friesian breeders was held at Hawera. Those present were: Messrs. C. H. Marchant (Cardiff), H. B. Johnson (Tokaora), Bradford (Auroa), Imlah (Kaupolronui), S'lby (Riverlea), .1. O'Shea, J. J Walker, A. P.. Walker (Ohangai), Hitchcock (Mamiia), Staples (Awatuna), Botts (Okal- : awa), H Merchant (Cardiff), and F. W. I Wright (Kupuni). Mr. C. A Marchant presided, and explained that the idea of the meeting was ,to try to work up a little enthusiasm in the Friesian breed. He pointed nut that much adverse I criticism was current regarding the breed, i whlrli, he said, was against all reason. He Quoted figures to show that Friesians held many of the greatest records. Tho speaker stressed the need or forming one strong branch of the Friesian Breeders' Association In Taranalci, and said that meetings could be held alternately In Stratford and Hawera. As there was only one Friesian breeder in New Plymouth, that end of the province need not bo considered. Jlr. Johnson pointed out that this was a eheesemaking district, and said that any factory manager, or anyone scientific enough to understand the ohcese-nmlaing qualities of milk, would tell them that the high testing cow was a faiiuro as far as cheeso was concerned. The Jerseys meant a lower cheese production in- proportion to the butter-rat. A good deal of the 'butter-fat did not go Into the cheese, and some that did go in was exuded after the cheese was made. They were.' told that the butter-fat lost from the cheese was recovered in the whey bultcr, but this was not correct. If they got a higher price fov their cheese, when made with high-testlnc milk, there would bo no cause for complaint, but no matter how good It was they could only get first grade price. That was the main > point they had to make. Mr. Marchant said this matter would trave been threshed out at tho Fahnerston i*ortl» conference liad they not been side-tracked by some of their Jersey friends. He mentioned a certain factory which sold Its output of whey butter at Is 5%d. but bought the butterfat at 2s Id per-lb, making a loss of 7%d on each lb of whey butter. On the output of the factory this meant a. loss for .the season of £7(10. ' Mr. Johnson moved, and Mr. Walker seconded, that thoy have only one association In Taranaki. This was carried unanimously. In the course of further discussion reference was made to a Friesian in Ameriea which had produced 120r,11> of butter-fat, and mention was also made of a Friesian now undergoing a test at I'almersten North, which would easily beat the Jersey record of Hawera. After a Hitlo further discussion It was decided to hold the next meeting at Stratford!— Abridged from Star.
