SUPPLY OF CEMENT.
TARANAKI'S WANTS. LETTER FROM THE PREMIER. The Prime Minister has again oom< municated with the New Plymouth Borough Council regarding supplies oi cement for the Taranaki district, representations on which were made by th« Council some time ago. Under date August 27, Mr. Maitej writes: "I have to advise you that upon inquiry I find that a shipment of 114 C tons from the Portland works ex Ngakuta is due at New Plymouth immediately, and this will be followed early next week by a small shipment from Golden Bay through Patea. The Board of Trade is also in communication witl the- Portland Cement Company with a view to arranging for a further supply by the Rarawa, which is now under going overhaul at Auckland. "The difficulty of maintaining suppliei is to some extent due to lack of tupping, but even were more shipping available I am afraid that the pretest position as to supplies could not permit? of much larger quantities being allotted to your district, as the demand throughout New Zealand ib very *Uch in excess of the output from the various works. I can assure you, however, that out of the available supplies due consideration is being given to the requirements of your district, and every effort is being made to ensnre an equitable distribution to all districts throughout New Zealand. "I hope that in the near future it will be possible to make arrangements to increase the output from the Portland works by commencing operations with the Warkworth plant, and your district will receive a fair share of the increased output resulting." The shipment of 1140 tons evidently refers to the one received last week.
