Wellington again successfully defended their title to the Itanfurly Shield this afternoon, when thoy defeated the Wanganui n presentatives, in the iiresence. of about COOU spectators, by 20 points to U. The ground was very heavy, half of the field being in «nud and water. The visiiors put up a splendid fight, especially in the second spell, and had hard luck in not winning. Bad handling on tha part of their backs was their worst feature, and they lacked the combined play which distinguished their opponents. The visiting forwards frequently rallied with pleasing effect, splendidly showing up in the loose. The challengers were handicapped in the first half by the sun, and there was no wind to speak of early in the game. Barker drew first blood for Wellington, touching down after a pretty piece of concerted play by dint of a fast sprint. * 11. Nicholls converted. OTAGO BEAT WAIRARAPA. Dunedln, August 28. At Carisbrook this afternoon, Otago defeated Walrarapa to the tune of 33 points to 3. As the sco/e indicates, the gams was very one-sided, the Otago forwards dominating the game throughout, and giving the backs every chance to score. Walrarapa apparently found the ordeal of threo matches i~ a week rather taxing, and made a rather poor showing. In fact, if the Otago passing had been more accurate, and the backs had shown better combination, the score would have been much larger still.

BANKS AND LAW DEFEAT CIVIL SERVICE. Tho match between Banks and Law and Civil Service which was played at Western Park, New Plymohth, on Saturday, resulted in a win for the former, after a, good gamj by 8 points to C. Dawson, of New Plymouth, was referee. THE LEAGUE GAME. CANTERBURY BEAT WELLINGTON. Christchurch, August 28. A representative League fixture, Wellington versus Canterbury, was played to-day In perfect weather. The game was fast and interesting, and not so one-sided as the score would indicate, Canterbury were most aggressive throughout, and hardly lot an opportunity slip, whereas Wellington had not the finish to round off their attacking movements. The final scores were: Canterbury 43, Wellington 10.
