Sir Thomas Hughes, chairman of* directors of the Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., informed a meeting of shareholders that the company has undertaken to hive a direct service between England and Australia within two years. It has offered to handle all classes of messages at one-third the existing rates, and give the Commonwealth 25 per cent, of the profits. It would also hand over the slations to the Government free of pavement at the end of a term of years. Melbourne, August 28. In the House of Representatives, the Govftrnmcnt was defeated by 35 votes to 20 on a clause in the Industrial Arbitration Amendment Bill in a non-party division. It is understood that the Nationalist Party met subsequently and had a wordy exchange with Mr. Hughes. The clause may be re-submitted on Tuesday. - Brisbane, August 28.
