THE DOMESTIC PROBLEM.

YOUNG WOMEN FOR COUNTRY. NOMINATION OF IMMIGRANTS. An effort is being made by the Auckland executive of the Farmers' Union to secure the immigration of young women for domestic employment in the country districts. With this object the suggestion was recently made to the Under-Secretary for Immigration, Mr. H. D. Thomson, that the executive should be allowed to nominate 50 suitable women through the Overseas Settlement Committee for passages to New Zealand from England, the union undertaking to find employment for its nominees on their arrival. Mr. Thomson has replied to the effect that he will immediately communicate witli the High Commissioner in London on behalf of the union on receipt of a definite proposal on the lines suggested. The provincial secretary to the union, Mr. W. Huey, stated that he had been instructed by his executive to endeavor to secure the nomination of 50 young women for domestic and dairy work. He added that he was also in favor of nominating 50 single men for farm labor. The only difficulty in connection with the nominated men that he could foresee was the short notice given by the High Commissioner of the impending arrival of the immigrants. The union would have the responsibility of finding suitable employment for the men I immediately on their arrival, and he ( would require to have reasonable notice of the date of their arrival so that no [delay should occur in placing them.
