FACTORY WAGES.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Mr, Green in your issue of Friday seems a .little annoyed by my remarks. Evidently I have struck the nail on the head. He says I should have gone & little deeper into imatters. Well, I had already gone far enough into matters to know what they had paid in wages. He says he would be pleased to know of another factory paying more wages per ton than, his company. He knows very well it is a hard nutter for any outsider to find out What any factory pays out in wages, unless same be stated in the balance sheet or papers. However, I can give him a few figures, and probably it may serve to let him see that he himself could go a little deeper into matters: Rahotu (330 tons), £4 18s 5.00 d per ton; Kabul (114 tons, about a third of Rahotu's output), £4 19s 1.47 d per ton; Eltham (2100 tons), £5 0s 1.59 d per ton; Mangatoki (1134 tons), £4 13s 6.75 d per ton. With the exception of Mangatoki, Bahoju la on the bottom of the list, but if the salary of the general manager of the Mangatoki factory were added, the payment per ton would Be over £5, leaving Hshotu at the .bottom. Now, if Mr. Green is a man of hU word, let him bring his factory staff's wages into line. Another point: If the inducement of not stating salary to be paid is any good, why are they still advertising for a butter-imaker? Probably the applicants find difficulty in making up their minds just how much to ask, fearing they may be too cheap Jn Mr. Green's eye. In conclusion, I hope Mr. Green will not need to spend a great deal more In advertising for a good man, a "fair worker," and not a "fair player," as he states his requirements.—l am, etc., Bahotu, Aug. 23, 1920.
