DISTRICT NEWS.
PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent) An outbreak of fire at the local public hall on Monday, at mid-day, was noticed by a neighbor, who, with the assistance of another resident, subdued it in Its initial stages, and before any very serious damage had been done. The origin remains a mystery. The Leap Year Ball, which takes place at the fungarehu Hall at an early date, promises to be the function of the season. The ladies' Improvement Committee ate in need of more financial assistance, and it is hoped that a good response will be made to augment their exchequer. Evidence of the land hunger that exists amongst returned soldiers in other parts of the Dominion apparently does not exist around these parts, as very few applications So 'far have been forwarded for the sections in the Pnrihaka Block, which have been set aside for soldier settlement, the ballot taking place this week. A complimentary social and dance to the ladies of Rahotu and Pungarehu was given by the returned soldiers of these districts on Friday last. The same ladies' committee \ which, made such a pronounced success of the leap year social and dance in Warea lately have on hand the arrangements for the spinsters' dance, which is fixed for an early date. The affair Is regarded as one of the chief attractions of the year in Warea, and everything augurs well for a thoroughly enjoyable evenlog.
After a lapse of several years, directors of cheese factories now have to face the Important question of the disposal of the season's output, whether by salo or consignment, and agents are again busy interviewing factory directorates. There is a good deal of diversity' of opinion on the .question. The price of butter-fat for .the ensuing season is evidently going to be larger than last year, judging by what has already been agreed upon by several factories. The prospects for the dairying industry point to a record year, provided, of course, a good season is experienced. The cows are now coming in rapidly, and though feed is none too plentiful yet, the majority of them are in good condition. It has been decided to commence cheese-making operations as from the 23rd August, and the factory will receive supplies every day. Everything, is in good working order, and as there are several new suppliers, whilst some of the older ones are increasing their herds, there seems to be every reason to anticipate a successful season, with every chance of a fairly substantial increase in the pay-out for butter-fat, which, after all, is the item that counts the most in dairying. A local Maori boy, named w'hari Pourl, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, the 18th inst. Deceased was stated to have injured his leg when playing football, re-open-ing the wound again by striking his leg accidentally with a hammer. Blood-poisoning sot in, and caused his.death. A tangi was held by the Patihaka natives
