LAND FOR EX-SOLDIERS.
BALLOT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. KEEN COMPETITION SHOWN There was an echo of the days in the army in New Plymouth yesterday. Devon Street appeared unusually busy, and there were many young men about wearing British "warms"' and army greatcoats, returned soldiers' badges, and other unmistakable signs which showed they were returned soldiers. Round about the Post Office about 150 of these ex-soldiers were frequently to be seen in groups, and anyone who enquired further and followed these men into the Courthouse or the Lands Office would have been reminded of the war again, for he would have heard a list of names called out, and as the men answered, it was remarkable to see the old arm spirt survived. With a sharp "here, sir" they unconsciously sprang to attention ns they had done many times before at Trentliam, Sling, and Etaples, and then laughed as they remembered they were not exactly on parade. It all just went to show how the army discipline has lingered with one unnoticed, leaving a touch of smartness which was good to see. The occasion which brought these men to New Plymouth was a ballot for land for soldier settlement, consisting of the Araheke, Ratapiko, Taitama, Matane, and Parihaka settlements, which was held at the Courthouse yesterday. A total of 147 soldiers applied for sections, and there were as many as 59 applicants for one section, while for several sections in the Parihaka Block there were no applications.
