MAORI WAR PENSION.
NEW PLYMOUTH APPLICANT. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. In the House to-day, the Defence Committee reported on the petition of Joseph Ingley, of New Plymouth, asking for the granting of the New Zealand War Medal and privileges pertaining thereto. _ The Committee recommended the petition for the favourable consideration of the Government.
Mr. S. G. Smith made an appeal for the adoption by the Government of the Committee's favourable recommendation. He said that the petitioner had served the country well m critical days. He. had not applied for the medal' when opportunity offered in the past, since at that time he had not required the pension, but his circumstances had changed, and'his claim upon the country was as great as it had ever been. The just claim of a veteran ought not to be ruled out merely because application had not been made before a certain date. Mr. Smith pointed out that some of the men who had served in the recent war hnd not yet applied for the. benefits to which they were entitled, but none would comtendi • that fo"r that reason they should be deprived of the pensions they had earned.
