Tlje Rev. J. Napier Milne, who has been on a short holiday visit to Fiji, has returned to New Plymouth. Mr. K. G. Archer, chief accountant in the Auckland office of the Standard Insurance Company, who has been appointed to succeed' Mr. H. T. H. Grave as manager of the New Plymouth branch of the company, will arrive here next week. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. for Taranaki, has been unwell for a few days owing, he believes, to slight ptomaine poisoning (telegraphs our Parliamentary reporter). He has been .able to carry on his duties. A Press Association telegram from Wellington announces the death of Mr. James MeLellan, who was for many years general manager in New Zealand for J. Lysaght, Ltd. He was in his fißth year and had suffered a long illness. He was a former president of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Harbor Board, and a prominent figure in bowling circles. Mr. Donald Reid, of the firm of Messrs Reid and Lemon, solicitors, Dunedin, and son of the late Mr. Donald Reid, died in his office yesterday afternoon (says a Press telegram from Dunedin). The deceased, who was the member for Taieri in the House of Representatives from 1903, to 15)08, was bom in Caversham. He studied law with Messrs. Smith, Anderson and Co., and was admitted a barrister in 1879. 'He was an authority on bi-metalism, and was secretary of the New Zealand Bi-Metallic League. He succeeded his father as President of the Otago Early Settlers' Association. Sir Joseph Ward is refusing to be drawn by interviewers in London (writes a correspondent), but rumor is busy with his name as a possible candidate for English Parliamentary honors. By po doing he will join the group which now comprises Righ Hon. Eugene Wason, M.P. for Clackmannan and Kinross; John Cathcart Watson, M.P. for Orkney and Shetland, and Dr. William Allan Chappie, M.P. for Stirlingshire; all of whom are New Zealanders. The only Australian member,ln the English' House of Commons at present is Sir Newton Moore, formerly Agent-General for West Australia, now M.P. for Islington, North London.
