RAILWAY TO MATIERE.

ASSURANCE BY MINISTER. A deputation from the, Ohura County Council was introduced to the Minister for Public Works on Friday by Mr W. T. Jennings (Waitomo). The main requests preferred were for a loan of £&>,- 000 and tire opening up of three quarries for a supply of metal for the roads The question of railway construction to Matiere was also discussed. In regard to the loan, the Minister stid that, of course, it could not all be expended at once, and he would endeavour to see that assistance was forthcoming for the work that t,hcy would be able to do this year. He would have a report from the engineer at Taumarunui as to the provision of acce*s to the quarries. With regard to the railway he was pleased to say that the steel for the bridge over the Ongarue River had arrived at Auckland. He was satisfied, that good work was being done in the tunnel, - and he had great hopes of the railway reaching Matiere sooner than was generally expected.
