TWO IMPORTANT APPOINTMENTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. London, August 23. General Lord Rawlinson has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the army in India. It is reported that General Sir Wm. Birdwood will be appointed commander of the Northern Army in India. —Aua.N.Z. Cable Assn. Lord Rawlinson, who is 55, is one of the group of distinguished British soldiers who came rapidly to the front during the Great War." He entered the army in 1884, and lie served in Burma, the Soudan, and the South African campaigns with distinction, while he added greatly to his military record % his fine work on the Western front during the Great War. He received the command of an army corps in France in )01S, and after the war he was appointed to the Aldershot Command. In recognition of Ms war service he received a peerage and £30,000. General Sir William Birdwood, who is 54, is best known in New Zealand by his association with the Anzacs at Gallipoli, while personal acquaintance was provided by his recent brief tour through the Dominion, including visits to New Plymouth and Hftwera.
