BOROUGH COUNCIL.
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The General Purposes Committee- of the New Plymouth Borqugh Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. Clgrke), Crs. J. W. Hay den. F. J. Hill. W. F. Short, W. A. Collis, A. S. Brooker;, R. L. Parkin, and y. H. S. Griffiths.
Mr. L. Etherington wrote on behalf of. Mrs. Riddle, owner of property at the corner of Gover Street and John Street, : Jf ■ Wrich the Council were detirouß of securing a portion to improve the corner, pointing out that the Council' asked for 55 links frontage to each street, and suggesting that 25 links taken off each side at the junction more than ample for what was required, tmd that his client was ready to offer that amount to the Council.—lt was resolved to apply for 55 links. Correspondence was received from Messrs. Blair Mason and Lee, the borough engineer, and the electrical enginner, in reference to hydro-electric extension and connecting the proposed new foribay with the present water supply. The Borough Inspector notified' that since the acute cement shortage, he had issued three permits for garages which required concrete walls on one side. In (wo of these cases the walls had been left out and rough boards fastened on temporarily. He further stated that all permits for concrete garages were out of court by reason of the attitude of the Board of Trade.—lt was resolved to grant extensions of permits in these cases until the cement shortage is relieved. No further permits will be issued for the present.
Mr. C. Carter drew attention to the Very dangerous nature of the footpaths and gully on the western side of the entrance to Carrington Road from Courtenay Street, and he suggested that the light in front of the Egmont Boot Factory should be removed to the corner of the Workers' Social Hall. —Mr. R. H. Bartley reported that the matter could be much improved by altering the bracket of the existing lamp so as to increase the spread of the lighting. It was decided to do this. A letter was received from the Prime Minister intimating that he would discuss with the President of the Board of Trade the Council's representations for a more equitable allocation of supplies of cement for Taranaki, and arrangements for regular shipments of supplies allocated. The draft lease of the N?aire Reserve lands will be submitted by the borough solictors to be approved, and will be forwarded to the tenants for their approval also before being engrossed. The revised schedule of charges submitted by the New Plymouth Carriers' Association, was approved.
